Policy Briefings and Events

Through European projects (CRESCENDO, ESM2025 and OptimESM), UKESM works with European Earth System Model (ESM) teams and Integrated Assessment Models (IAMs) to improve the representation of key processes in the Earth system models and develop more reliable simulations of future climate change.

Policy briefings and events, where we talk to policymakers directly, are a key part of how we communicate the results of the research from Earth system modelling.

Below are some of the policy briefings and events that UKESM has contributed to :

COP27 in Egypt & online from 6 to 18 November 2022

This policy-oriented briefing produced by the CRESCENDO project covers:

New scenarios for realizing Paris.

Can the biosphere help us achieve Paris?

Changes in global energy demand may help realize Paris.

This report summarizes some initial findings relating to the CMIP6 DECK and scenarioMIP simulations.

We discuss the higher climate sensitivity exhibited by some CMIP6 models, compared to earlier CMIP cycles.

We outline some of the early explanations for the higher climate sensitivity and discuss implications for future projections within scenarioMIP and for carbon budgets aimed at different policy goals, such as realizing the Paris climate targets.

EASME / European Commission – Climate Science2Policy Workshop in November 2020

Climate Science2Policy workshop took place on 17 and 18 November 2020. It was organised by the European Commission, Executive Agency for Small and Medium-sized enterprises (EASME), in collaboration with a cluster of Horizon 2020 Climate and Earth System Science projects.

The main objectives of the workshop were to present the state-of-the-art on climate sensitivity and emerging findings on the physical science of climate change, as emerged from the ongoing projects, and to identify key policy-relevant messages and research needs. More information about the workshop and all of the workshop presentations.
